Faux/real will be centred on the Marigny District in New Orleans but will reach out through many of the historic districts of New Orleans:
Fauburg Marigny was a district where French, Italian, German and Free People of Color once mingled shoulder to shoulder, and it is still a cosmopolitan and artist-friendly place. Beautiful Creole cottages have been restored and painted in rich golds, reds, yellows and greens. Historic commercial spaces have been refurbished as guesthouses, bars, restaurants and performance spaces. The Marigny was developed as New Orleans’ second suburb over two hundred years ago, and is on the beaten path for locals and visitors looking for great music, great food, and an authentic, historic neighborhood.
Central City is the destination for the new New Orleans. The recent completion of the landmark buildings of the ‘Jazz Market of New Orleans’ and ‘SoFAB’ – the food ‘museum’ of New Orleans, along with the African-American Performance Centre ‘Ashe’, and the alternative theatre/performance space ‘Zeitgeist’ have created a vital and rapidly developing cultural hub. Faux/real will be promoting food, music and performance in this neighbourhood. Mid-City is a gorgeous historical neighbourhood, centred on the magnificent Esplanade Avenue, lined with ancient live oaks and brightly painted historical houses. Faux/real will set events at new theatres as well as the historic New Orleans Museum of Art. And, of course, the ancient French Quarter itself is a hub of performance opportunites. We will be partnering with restaurants such as Cane & Table and Latitude 29 and performance venues to bring new Faux/Real audiences into the old Quarter.
Faux/real was conceived as an evolution of the New Orleans Fringe festival and we will follow their lead in encouraging the participants in this festival to take advantage of the many performance spaces, bars, and restaurants available throughout these historic neighbourhoods. There are Theatres, Cabaret Bars, Galleries, Cafes, many Non-Traditional Spaces such as commercial spaces, warehouses, and even outdoor locations. Faux/Real will provide a comprehensive list of spaces to all artists and companies registering for the festival and provide assistance to facilitate the connections between artists and possible venues.
